Congressman Dan Burton Honored for His 100-Percent Voting Record on Breast Cancer Issues

CONGRESSMAN DAN BURTON HONORED FOR HIS 100-PERCENT VOTING RECORD ON BREAST CANCER ISSUES

Congressman Dan Burton [R-IN-05] was honored with a Certificate of Excellence by the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) for his"100 percent rating." Congressman Burton was one of only 140 lawmakers (out of 535) - six Senators and 134 Representatives - who earned a perfect "100 percent rating" from NBCC during the 109th Congress.

Burton stated, "I am proud to be recognized by such a well-respected, hard-working organization like the National Breast Cancer Coalition. I believe that we have lost too many mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters to this terrible disease."

The Certificate of Excellence was awarded to Congressman Burton in part for his efforts to secure $150 million in funding for the Department of Defense (DOD) Peer-Reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP), the enactment of the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (S.757/H.R.2231), and the preservation of the Medicaid Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program.

"Breast cancer is a political issue - not just a scientific and medical one," said Fran Visco, president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition. "Lawmakers must know that they will be held accountable for their action - or inaction - on breast cancer and health reform public policy."

Concluded Burton, "So long as I have the privilege to represent Hoosier women in the House of Representatives I will continue to fight along side organizations like NBCC to ensure that medical researchers and doctors have the tools they need to end this scourge once and for all, and that all women suffering through the trauma of breast cancer have access to the best quality medical care."
